How much does a KNX home automation system cost in 2026?

"How much does it cost?" It is the first question we hear at every meeting, and rightly so. Online you find everything and its opposite: €100 kits and installations costing tens of thousands of euros. The real answer depends on your home and on what you want to control. Here is what drives the price, with examples from our own projects in Saint-Louis and Switzerland.

What drives the price

Five factors explain most of the difference between two quotes. Knowing them helps you compare and set your budget.

  • 01
What you want to control. Lighting only, or also shutters, heating, video intercom, alarm? Each function adds hardware and programming.
  • 02
New build or renovation. In a new build, the KNX cable runs with the rest of the wiring. In a renovation, walls sometimes need opening, or compatible wireless solutions are used.
  • 03
Wired KNX or wireless. KNX costs more upfront but lasts over 20 years, without depending on one brand. Wireless is cheaper but less reliable at scale.
  • 04
Floor area and number of rooms. More rooms mean more controls, sensors and actuators in the panel.
  • 05
The devices you choose. A push button and a glass touch screen are not the same price. Finishes count in the final budget.

Three budgets for three projects

Here are our price ranges for three typical projects, installation and programming included. They are orders of magnitude: only a quote after a site visit gives an exact price.

  • 01
Apartment: €2,500 to €3,500. Connected video intercom with touch screen and lighting control in a few rooms, usually without major works.
  • 02
Family house: €8,000 to €15,000. Lighting, roller shutters, room-by-room heating and scenes ("Leaving", "Night") on wired KNX, ideally in a new build or major renovation.
  • 03
Premium villa: €15,000 to €20,000 and more. Full KNX installation: recessed lighting and moods, heating, security, control screens in the living areas.

Real projects

Apartment in Saint-Louis. The client wanted to see who rings from the sofa and open the door remotely. Door station, touch screen and commissioning: the job was done in one day.

Villa in Switzerland. We installed controlled recessed LED lighting in the living room, lounge, an attic bedroom and the bathroom. This lighting-focused project took 2 days, for about €3,000. Proof that you can start with one function and add more later.

Hospitality. We also work in demanding venues such as the Les Trois Rois hotel, where reliability is essential.

An investment to look at over 20 years

A well-designed KNX installation pays off over time. By contrast, a cheap app-dependent solution can become unusable if the manufacturer ends its service.

  • 01
Up to 30% energy savings. On our projects, heating that lowers in empty rooms, lights that do not stay on and controlled shutters deliver up to 30% savings.
  • 02
A system that evolves. KNX is an open standard used by hundreds of manufacturers. You can add a function in five years without replacing everything.
  • 03
A property that gains value. A comfortable, efficient home is more attractive to buyers and tenants.

Four pitfalls to avoid

These mistakes come up often in projects we are asked to take over.

  • 01
A quote without a visit. A price given without seeing the home almost always hides extras.
  • 02
Forgotten programming. Check that commissioning and scenes are included in the quote.
  • 03
Wanting everything at once. Start with the essentials and plan the cabling for later: adding later costs little when anticipated.
  • 04
A non-certified installer. A KNX Partner integrator delivers a compliant, documented installation that any certified professional can take over.

Frequently asked questions

Can home automation be installed in an existing home?

Yes. Depending on the case, we use existing conduits, a few discreet passages or KNX-compatible wireless modules. A visit lets us choose the right solution.

How long does the work take?

It depends on the project, whether an apartment, a house or a villa. For example: one day for a connected video intercom in an apartment, two days for controlled lighting in a villa.

Does the price include programming?

Yes. Our quotes include hardware, installation and programming of the scenes.

Is financial support available?

Yes for people with reduced mobility: grants can fund home automation equipment that makes daily life easier. Mention it during the visit and we will look at what applies to your situation.

Do you work in Switzerland?

Yes. Based in Saint-Louis, we work in Basel, Allschwil, Binningen and across the Basel region, in line with Swiss standards.

How much does a quote cost?
